Northern Pike
Northern pike are one of the most common sport fish in Ontario. As a favourite amongst most anglers, the powerful, quick pike can destroy lures easily before heading back to the weeds. Known as fighters, it’s not surprising that northern pike rank as one of the top three gamefish in Ontario.
In the northern areas of Ontario, pike tipping the scales at 30 pounds or more is not uncommon. More regularly, however, three to seven pound northern pike are caught. The record, however is, 42.2 pounds!
Known to inhabit areas with lily pads and weeds, the plants provide excellent camouflage for the fish while chasing their prey. Fall is the best time to try and catch pike, not only because of solid landings, but for the sheer enjoyment of nature.
